From the Upper Room to Calvary: A Night of Faith, Courage, and Community

On Sunday evening, 10 May 2026, following the 6pm Mass, the parish community of St Leonard's Church came alive with youthful energy, deep reflection, and joyful fellowship as young adults gathered for the LNS Young Adult Formation Night.

Although a number of young adults were unable to attend because they were celebrating Mother’s Day with their families, the spirit of the evening remained vibrant and deeply uplifting. In many ways, their absence itself reflected something beautiful: the importance of family, gratitude, and honouring those who have nurtured us in faith and love. The gathering became a reminder that Christian formation does not happen apart from family life, but often grows from it.

What unfolded throughout the evening was far more than simply another parish event. It became a powerful reminder that young adults are searching not only for community, but also for meaning, purpose, and a deeper encounter with Christ.

The night began warmly at 7:00 pm with gathering, welcome, and grace before dinner led by Fr Roger. Conversations quickly filled the parish hall as familiar faces reunited and newcomers were welcomed with genuine hospitality. In a world where many young people experience isolation and uncertainty, this simple act of sharing a meal together reflected the beauty of the early Christian community, people gathered not as strangers, but as fellow pilgrims.

Frances then led the group into prayer, inviting everyone to open their hearts to God under the evening’s moving theme: “Discernment: A Journey from the Upper Room to Calvary.” It was a theme that resonated deeply. Discernment is not merely about making decisions; it is about learning to recognise God’s voice amid the noise, confusion, and pressures of modern life.

The icebreaker session facilitated by Frances created an atmosphere of openness and trust. Young adults courageously shared one word describing their current faith journey: searching, growing, steady, returning, hopeful. Those simple words revealed something profound: every person arrives carrying different stories, struggles, hopes, and questions, yet God meets each one exactly where they are.

A highlight of the evening was the inspiring input session by Bro. Victor Atuhura. Through his reflections, participants were invited to journey spiritually from the Upper Room, a place of intimacy, prayer, and encounter, to Calvary - the place of surrender, sacrifice, and ultimate trust in God. His message challenged everyone to recognise that authentic discernment often requires courage: the courage to move beyond comfort zones, to trust God in uncertainty, and to follow Christ even when the path is difficult.

The small group sharing that followed became one of the most grace-filled moments of the night. In an atmosphere of honesty and respect, young adults reflected deeply on questions about God’s guidance, the struggles of discernment, and responding to God’s call. What emerged was a beautiful testimony that faith journeys are rarely straightforward. Many spoke about fears, doubts, unanswered questions, and the difficulty of listening to God in a distracted world. Yet there was also hope, hope born from discovering that no one walks the journey alone.

During the plenary sharing, common themes surfaced repeatedly: trust, courage, patience, and learning to listen more attentively to God’s voice. It became clear that the Holy Spirit was moving gently among the group, creating connections and stirring hearts.

The evening concluded with a peaceful time of prayer and reflection centred on Jesus’ words from the Gospel of John: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” In the silence, many encountered the quiet yet powerful presence of God.

As the night transitioned into fellowship and conversation, there was a tangible sense that something meaningful had taken place. Friendships were strengthened, faith was renewed, and hearts were encouraged.

The success of the LNS Young Adult Formation Night was not measured merely by attendance or organisation, but by something deeper: young people encountering Christ in community, prayer, reflection, and one another.

In a society that often tells young adults to rely only on themselves, the evening proclaimed a different message, that true discernment begins when we allow God to lead us from the safety of the Upper Room to the transforming love of Calvary.

The journey continues, and already there is great anticipation for the next gathering on 24 May 2026. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide, inspire, and strengthen the young adults of St Leonard’s as they walk together in faith, hope, and love.
