Last Sunday, 15 February, our Lower North Shore parish community gathered at St Philip Neri’s Church, Northbridge, to celebrate Catechist Sunday, a special occasion dedicated to honouring the generous men and women who serve in the Church’s teaching ministry.
The 9:00am Mass was celebrated by Fr Stephen Wayoyi and was beautifully attended by catechists from across the Lower North Shore. It was a joyful and prayerful celebration, filled with gratitude for those who dedicate their time and hearts to sharing the faith.
Catechist Sunday recognises the invaluable contribution of volunteer catechists in our parish, including SRE catechists, Sacramental catechists, RCIA catechists, and Children’s Liturgy of the Word catechists. Their ministry forms young hearts, supports families, accompanies adults seeking the sacraments, and nurtures faith at every stage of life.
Because Catechist Sunday highlights the importance of the Church’s teaching mission, it also gives us the opportunity to acknowledge Catholic school teachers who worship in our parish. Their daily witness in classrooms complements and strengthens the Church’s catechetical mission.
Before the final blessing, the catechists renewed their commitment to faithfully proclaim and teach the Gospel. Their promises were affirmed and blessed by Fr Stephen, a moving moment that reminded us all that catechesis is not simply a task, but a vocation.
The celebration continued with a sumptuous cuppa in SPN’s church hall, where laughter, fellowship, and shared stories reflected the warmth and unity of our community.
We thank all our catechists for their dedication and generosity. Through your service, the faith continues to be handed on faithfully, joyfully, and courageously to the next generation.
